President's Message
The Alaska primary ballot in August will include Ballot Measure 1. A
group called Alaskans For Open Government is the primary supporter
of the measure, having contributed close to $80,000.00 to the
campaign. The stated aim at ballot 1 is to prevent public money from
being used for lobbying. If enacted, thousands of Alaskans will lose
their ability to donate freely to candidates of their choice. For
instance, Measure 1 would prohibit any Alaskan who has a government
contract larger than $500.00 from making political contributions.
Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins would also be
prohibited from donating money. But large multi-national
corporations whose contracting offices are out of state would not be
prohibited.
Supporters call Ballot Measure 1 the "Clean and Open Government"
initiative, yet Alaskans For Open Government is unwilling to
disclose who is financing this ballot initiative. So much for
openness. The Alaska Attorney General has issued the opinion that
Ballot Measure 1 will not stand up to a constitutional challenge.
