The Origins of UFCW Local 1496

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1496 can trace its roots in Alaska back to 1941.  At that time, we were part of the Retail Clerks International Union. Many years later, Retail Clerks International Union and Amalgamated Meat Cutters International Union became one union under the name of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.  UFCW Local 1496 became part of this international union that has grown to over 1.4 million members worldwide.

Our membership in Alaska is currently about 3,700 members throughout the state.  We have offices located in Anchorage and Fairbanks which serve all areas of Alaska.  UFCW Local 1496 is run by its members who elect their local union officers.  They also help negotiate contracts, resolve grievances, organize other workers, and work to improve the communities where they work and live.
