ALASKANS FOR A FAIR MINIMUM WAGE
On June 24, 2013 in Juneau, Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell certified an initiative petition application filed April 26, 2013 by Alaskans for a Fair Minimum Wage (AFMW). If passed by voters, the ballot measure would increase the Alaska minimum wage. Alaska had the nation’s highest minimum wage for decades, but has fallen in recent years, to 14th place among the states. The state of Washington has the highest minimum wage at $9.19, followed by Oregon at $8.95. If approved by voters, the proposed ballot measure would increase the Alaska Minimum Wage to $8.75 per hour on January 1, 2015, to $9.75 per hour on January 1, 2016, and provide for an annual cost of-living adjustment based on the U.S. Department of Labor Consumer Price index for Anchorage in subsequent years. Ten states, including Washington and Oregon, have an annual cost-of-living index adjustment in their minimum wage laws, and 10 more states are considering adopting indexing provisions. Information on the initiative and on the minimum wage is available on the AFMW website www.AlaskaNeedsaRaise.org.
