At the recent 2018 Eighth Regular Convention of the UFCW International Union in Las Vegas, Nevada, the delegates voted to amend Article 18 (A)3 of the International Constitution, which sets forth per capita to the International Union. Our delegates considered the need for a strong and effective Union that has the resources to organize and grow, to bargain better wages and working conditions for our members and to fight for dignity and equality for all workers. The financial health of the International Union is critical in fulfilling our core mission of organizing and negotiation better contracts for our members. Therefore, Union dues will increase by $2.00 per month effective July 1, 2018 (.46 cents per week). Our last dues increase was in October 2013, nearly 5 years ago. As a reminder, you can take advantage of receiving 1/2 month’s dues refund by attending the Quarterly General Membership Meetings. By attending these meetings, you will make up for the dues increase and then some.

UFCW Local 1496 and International staff along with the Employee Bargaining Committee met with Safeway Labor Relations on May 15th, 16th and 17th in Anchorage for the first round of negotiations for the Anchorage/Eagle River agreement, which expired on May 31st. The Union side and the Employer exchanged proposals and made some progress. We are scheduled to meet again on July 24th, 25th and 26th. We have signed a contract extension with the Company that will keep your current contract in full effect until we can reach a new agreement. The Union and Committee are working hard on your behalf to secure the best wages, benefits and working conditions the Employer has to offer.
