We wish to thank John Taggart from Tongass Trading Company in Ketchikan for his many years of loyal service to our Local 1496.  He was a Shop Steward and a Vice President on our Executive Board and always there to lend a hand in whatever he could do to make our Union better and stronger.  We hope you enjoy your well-deserved retirement and know that you will be missed by all here at the Local office and I'm sure at Tongass.

Alaska afl-CIO forms committee to support the national union veterans council

10/1/2018

There are more than 68,000 veterans that live in Alaska. Many of which our Union brothers and sisters that have served in the Armed Forces. Alaska’s labor movement has always worked to get veterans into good paying jobs through programs like Helmets to Hardhats. The Alaska Committee will operate close with the National Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO.                                                                                                                                                                                              The National Union Veterans Council brings working-class veterans together to speak out on the issues that impact veterans the most, especially the need for good jobs and a strong, fully funded and staffed VA.  ~Additionally, they hold private enterprise and elected officials accountable for their words and actions.  The Union Veterans Council believes wholeheartedly that the ability for someone to self-identify as “pro-veteran” isn’t determined by what lapel pin they don or what catchphrase they employ; veterans face real issues that require real actions—constructive actions that lead to positive solutions.                                                                                                                                           The Union Veterans Council, is committed to fighting every day for those who have fought for us.  For more information on National Unions Veterans Council, AFL-CIO to sign up, or how to get involved. go online to:  unionveterans.org
