A report released by Americans for Tax Fairness reveals that Walmart’s low wages and poor benefits cost American taxpayers $6.2 billion yearly in public assistance through food stamps, Medicaid and subsidized housing. Using data from a 2013 study by Democratic staff of the United States House of Representatives on Education and the Workforce, the report shows that Walmart’s sub-standard wages and benefits often force workers to rely on public assistance programs. “A single Walmart Supercenter costs taxpayers between $904,542 and $1.75 million per year,” the author wrote. The report’s findings are published in the current issue of the Forbes Magazine.
